The Marshall County 4-H Horse program offers many opportunities for 4-Her’s to learn about the many facets of the horse industry. Topics include anatomy, feeding, health care, barn and pasture management, tack and equipment, and safety. Youth may participate in educational contests and those youth that own horses may show at the regional and state 4-H horse shows.

Educational Contests

Educational contests teach various life skills including communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and decision making.

*Youth do not have to own a horse in order to participate in the educational contests.*

Hippology

Hippology means the “the study of the horse”. Members learn about various topics in the horse industry from coat colors and breeds to horse health and nutrition.

In the contest members take a knowledge test individually but are scored as a team. A team consist of four members in the same age division. Age divisions are Junior (4th & 5th), Jr. High (6th-8th), and Senior (9th-12th). Members may also compete as an individual.

Horse Bowl

Similar to Hippology, Horse Bowl covers all topics within the horse industry; however, it is a quiz bowl style competition where members buzz in to answer questions. Members compete on a team of 3-4 within their age division.

Horse Judging

Members evaluate horses based on their physical characteristics and performance. Members compete individually but are scored as a team. A team may consist of 3-4 within their age division. Members may also compete as an individual.
